Two chelsea gallery-hopping adventures ago I stumbled upon Yayoi Kusama’s “Aftermath of Obliteration of Eternity” at Gagosian. I’d seen pictures and been amazed but never thought I’d get to experience it. You enter that small structure, and the entire walls and ceiling are mirrored, and there’s a mirrored platform you stand on and you’re surrounded by an inch or so of water on the floor. These lights/candles are flickering, dimming on and off, and it’s all reflected everywhere just going out into infinity. It was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

So I've just been chillin since I've been home. Adjusting to Long Island life, seein friends, havin fun. Went to orientation for my internship yesterday, looks like it's gonna be a fun lil' job. I watched The Fly yesterday for the first time with Jackie and Riley. SO FUCKING GREAT. Too much Jeff Goldblum nudity and not enough Geena Davis side-boob.

Just finished reading Calvin Tomkin's "Lives of the Artists." It's just a compilation of pieces he wrote over the last decade about some contemporary artists. Most of my favorites actually (Hirst, Koons, Sherman, Barney, Currin, Cattelan, Johns, Turrel, etc.) They're all amazing short bios paired with one-on-one interviews, mostly at the artists' home and studio. He really gets to know them and, I feel, accurately portrays them. Pick this shit up, art kids.

Had another nice weekend in the city with Rob. It'll be the last one till I move back home. I got an internship in the city for the summer so I'll be there a lot, I'm really excited about that. Can't wait to just chill on Long Island at home with friends and stuff, as well.

The semester is ending so quickly it's frightening. I'm stressed about moving out. Just...so much stuff. There will be lots of sentimental and cathartic cleaning/throwing out over the next couple of weeks. Projects and papers probably won't kill me too much, I'll be alright with those. I always am.

We saw August: Osage County on Saturday afternoon. I'm used to musicals, and this was a play, and it was absolutely amazing. It won the Pulitzer and the Tony, so I knew it wasn't going to be bad, but it really blew me away. It was incredible!

At night we watched Grey Gardens, the HBO movie about the Beale sisters. I love-love-love the original Maysles Brothers' documentary. It's one of the best documentaries of all time. I was worried about this movie being made, but it was SO fantastic. I was totally pleased with it. Drew was AMAZING and Little Edie and Jessica Lange literally transformed into Big Edie.

And I had never seen Harold & Maude OR The Graduate, so I finally got around to watching both of them on the bus rides, and loved every single minute. Simply amazing. I love when movies soundtracks are entirely by a single artist. The Graduate soundtrack was entirely Simon & Garfunkel and Harold & Maude was all Cat Stevens. Movies should do that more often.

I saw Die Hard and Say Anything for the first time on the bus back and forth to NY last weekend. Both were superb. I saw "Rock of Ages" and "HAIR" in the city on broadway. Good, fun stuff. Finals are starting up and it's a bit overwhelming as always, but I manage. Always do. Having this apartment to myself is a bit daunting but I'm slowly slowly getting used to it. Lots of cathartic cleaning and throwing out and listening to Fleetwood Mac and solo Stevie stuff.

I've also been listening to a lot of 80's rock. Mainly Asia's "Heat Of The Moment" and "Nothing But a Good Time" by Poison and "Any Way You Want It" by Journey. And oh, "Sister Christian" of course.

PS. I made REALLY PROVOCATIVE ART in 9th grade...

Owen always tells me factoids about life that change me. "Respect" was originally wrote and sung by a man, Otis Redding. It's the fucking biggest female empowerment anthem that I can think of. Brilliant. Did everyone know that and I'm slow?

ALSO she does a cover of "The Weight" that I'd never heard and it was absolutely incredible. Listen.

Also, we watched "How To Draw A Bunny" tonight. I'd seen it last year and loved every second of it, it was even better the second time. Everyone see it.

So my spring break trip down to Naples, Florida [the Hamptons of the South we've established], to stay with Libby and her mom and aunt at this gigantic beach house for the week was absolutely perfect in every which way. It was exactly what I needed to escape the bleak sadness of winter in Baltimore, and the silliness that'd been going on in my personal life. I'll review the trip solely in my camera phone pictures and a list of things that remind me of the week:

So I've had a crazy little week filled with personal things and loads of schoolwork, but it all culminated nicely in this warm hazy grey March day. Everything's alright now. It's Libby's last night living here with me in the apartment, it's the end of an era. We had great times here. She's moving into a hotel in the harbor tomorrow. It's my birthday weekend coming up, peacing-out the teen years, another era ended. Chilling on the beach in Florida for a week with copious amounts of champagne and wine is greatly needed and will do me much good.

Watched 'Videodrome' a few weeks ago. So great.

Found this blog, Waxin' & Milkin': A Visual Mixtape. It's fantastic. They just post single photos from the 80's and 90's like the one below. Nuff said.

Also been watching too many Stairway to Stardom videos. It was this old public access show from Brooklyn in the 70's. It's fucking beautiful. These are the two best ones:

Was in the city for a nice long relaxing weekend.

Seeing the new Lisa Yuskavage show at David Zwirner was life-changing.

It's such a cliche but these photos from the gallery website do NOTHING for the paintings themselves.

The colors are so much more vibrant in person, and the large scale most of them are is utterly fantastic, but they're worth showing anyway...

My drawing teacher from last year is friends with her, and had told me last semester he visited her at her apartment and she was focusing more on playing the piano now than painting. I'm quite glad she decided to start painting again...

And I've always loved Francesco Vezzoli, for his needlepoints of Edith Piaf and other crazy shit, like the infamous fake trailer for a remake of the movie "Caligula", but my love elevated to a new height after seeing his latest piece - a 1-minute commercial directed by Roman Polanski starring Michelle Williams and Natalie Portman for a fake perfume that doesn't exist, "Greed." So so great.

I rarely post work I do in school, so I figured I might for a change. In PhotoImaging, a class I don't particularly like, we had to take our own photos and make a poster for a group photography show, a book cover+back, and a CD cover+back. I chose the "Love Love Love" show at the Martos Gallery I never got to see, but wanted to terribly, one of my favorite Palahniuk books "Invisible Monsters", and my favorite album of all time, Interpol's "Antics." I never think self-taken photographs work well on re-makes of book covers and things, but thankfully Libby had all those extra pills lying around from her pill bracelets cause it made me really happy with the photos I got for the Invisible Monsters cover.

i wrapped the two book covers around actual books that magically fit them perfectly. it was fun to hold them in my hands and see them as 3D functional objects:

This photo best sums up my life as of late. A little nutty in the personal realm, but still maintaining some calm and peace. We've been watching this Time-Life documentary The American Photograph and we saw the 1930's-1950's installment yesterday and it was stunning. There was this show at MoMA called The Family of Man that was a compilation of black and white photos from around the world showing every walk of life, and I started to tear up watching it, it was so beautiful. Photographs are so incredibly powerful it's so amazing to me. But yeah, things are okay for the most part.

So I haven't posted since I've been back cause I've been crazy-busy. 18 credits this semester, 4 studios (a double-studio on Monday), 2 lectures, and lots of homework/learning to come. I'll be alright, I just actually have to work for once. I got back here last Saturday, and once my parents left I called up Owen and he said "Meet me in 20 minutes, we're going to see Obama." We had no idea what we were doing and if we'd see anything, but we headed down towards the harbor and went through security, and long story short, got to see Obama speak. It was absolutely amazing.

I spent a lot of time over at Owen's new place at the Copycat, too, cause our apartment didn't have heat. It's great over there, and we went to the abandoned coat factory next door a bunch of times and I got some great boxes and buttons and coat labels and a shnazzy brown blazer. This is the view from the roof of the coat factory:

I went out to an after-hours dance club on Charles Street for a while and it was fun as hell. Dancing on the raised platforms with Libby and Nathan to Lady Gaga and Britney and Beyonce, having moms cheer us on, throw us their scarves, and watching/fully enjoying 3 obsese black women go apeshit to every song that came on, namely "Womanizer" and "Single Ladies." It was fantastic. No photographic documentation of that unfortunately.

I went to The Book Thing this afternoon and added to my growing collection of cheesy teen novels from the late 70's-early 90's. They're just so fucking funny, I'll never get tired of them. This is just a tiny highlighted portion I had to scan and share with the world:

I had a very full, busy, lazy, fun, awesome long weekend in the city. Highlights included going to the Whitney and the Brooklyn Museum, partying, meeting people, dancing on tables at a gay club in Hell's Kitchen, diners at 5am, pizza in Brooklyn during a snowstorm, a Golden Globe party at a swanky apartment in Harlem with a view of the city that I'd kill for. Also, watching the best part of Step Brothers on repeat and singing the song in the streets of Manhattan:

One of my favorite GIGANTIC photo-collages at the Gilbert+George retrospective exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. There was also a feminist collection that had an amazing Tracy Emin neon and a great Barbara Kruger.

Okay, so I have no recollection of where I first heard of Terrence Koh, but I was immediately intrigued. His art is just insane, granted he pisses and cums on things, but whatever, it still looks incredible. His website is also nuts, hundreds of links he calls "bunny holes" lead you to pre-y2k net art pages, you can be mesmerized for hours. Here are some photos from the Saatchi collection:

So I went out to the Hamptons this weekend. We're just killing time until New Years Eve, you know? It's so different being out there in the winter than in the summer. I have so many great summer memories of being there -I've gone with Riley every summer for the past 7 years or so. We always bring friends, mates, etc. We went to the beach a couple of times, the first time it was over 50 degrees, misty, and foggy beyond belief. There was no horizon, sky was totally grey and looking down the coastline, it faded off into nothingness. Water was grey and chopy, the sand wasn't disturbed, it was beautiful. The photograph below doesn't begin to capture it, but I wanted to remember that moment. We went again this morning and it was sunny and colder but equally beautiful. I wouldn't have traded growing up on an island, being right next to the ocean, always a minute away from a beach, for anything else. The other photo is from the drive home tonight, we saw a complete sunset that seemed to last an entire hour. My head is a little fuzzy right now, like the beach photo, but it'll clear up, just like sky did.

Oh, and I collected small smooth white stones with gorgeous white/clear lines on the surface. There were thousands on the seashore, but I felt drawn to these particular ones. Walking back to the car, I found this half-shell mostly buried in the sand, but I got it out and it was a perfect lil' home for my rockies.

i've been watching woody allen movies on vhs for the past few weeks they are fucking wonderful, i can't get over them. so so good. 'manhattan' was my favorite, aaand not just cause of young stunning meryl. annie hall will always at the top, though.

LET THE BONNIE TYLER APPRECIATION COMMENCE

So it turns out Bonnie covered CCR's amazing song "Have You Ever Seen the Rain?" And by 'covered' I mean completely COMPLETELY BUTCHERED THE SONG in EVERY possible way by screaming the entire thing. In other words, it's absolutely fantastic, accompanied by a music video that is too incredible to even begin to describe. Judging from the first 2 seconds of it you know it's going to be fantastic, just watch the magic...

Bonnie's actual video for "HOLDING OUT FOR A HERO" is out of this world as well, and actually a pretty great song. But what makes this song most memorable is this drag queen's performance of it from Miss Black America. If you watch ANY of it, watch seconds :15-:30 and you WILL NOT regret it.

Oh so speaking of drag queens, the new Beyonce "Single Ladies" video and song are outstanding, but did you know where the original inspiration for the video came from? A group of 3 fab ladies did a Fosse-choreographed dance routine to some song called "Mexican Breakfast" back in the early 60's and some GENIUS dubbed "Walk it Out" over it and it's phenomenal. So I saw Synecdoche, NY, the new Charlie Kaufman movie, with Nathan on Friday. I've been excited about this movie since it was first announced about two years ago. I'd even read the first half of the script about a year ago. It lived up to all my expectations. It was visual poetry. I don't think anyone in the world will ever fully comprehend it, because I look at the movie simply as Charlie Kaufman's brain totally unfiltered produced on film. With multiple viewings, I'll understand more and more, but I think nothing will be as beautiful as that first time seeing it, soaking it all in, being immersed in his confusing, lonely, gorgeous world. Watch the trailer if you're interested.

We're doing a postcard series in Graphic Design class and we're researching architects and I picked Santiago Calatrava and fell in love. I'll let the buildings and bridges speak for themselves...

With the holiday season rapidly approaching, I realize all I want is money to save up for traveling and splurging at American Apparel as well as these items:

and loving every second of it, but now i started to look into Leslie Hall more

and just embraced everything this crazy/beautiful woman has done.

i watched a documentary on leigh bowery today. art kids know him as 'that obese guy who modeled for lucian freud a lot', and that's all i knew him from, but he was this performance artist / social figure in the 80's who made these incredible wearable art/sculpture/fashion pieces and essentially just wore them out to clubs and partied in them. he inspired the whole 'party monster' thing heavily:

oh and listen to this outstanding cover of 'girls just want to have fun' by some dude that i found on perez just now. it's bizzarely intriguing and slightly haunting.

just thought i'd start this up for some extra fun.

MARILYN MINTER has been my latest obsession

she's a photographer and photo-realist painter

she does all her paintings with enamel paint on metal

these first three are paintings and the last one is a photo-billboard she had up in Chelsea for a while, wish i could've seen it.

speaking of Chelsea, when Libby and I were there during fall break, we found a beautiful park right on chelsea piers and sat down on a bench and smoked a spliff then headed off gallery hopping. Libby's friend told us there was an amazing show at Gagosian but gave no explaination of what it was, just that we had to go. So we go, and our minds are BLOWN. There was a show of Cecily Brown's paintings, and they were all life-changing. I'll tell you right now, online images of her work do no justice whatsoever to how incredible these are in person, but just so you get the jist...
